edition of Wright's Book of Poultry
(Note the fineness of the pencilling. I would prefer her tail carried higher
and more open)
The Female
Select your very best
exhibition quality female. She will be an even rich golden bay, as fine and even in
pencilling as can be got. The pencilling must be well defined, straight across the feather
with no mossiness or peppering. The ratio of black to ground is exactly 1:1. Pay
particular attention to breast markings as these MUST extend
evenly right up to the throat. Her hackles should be completely free from black. Look for
a hen with a wide tail, thick at the base and carried in fan fashion. NEVER
use a hen which has weak or no markings on her front and breast.
Body, breast and back feathers from
a pullet breeding female
(Note the even pencilling and no mossiness on the back)
The Male
The male to use with
such hens will be from a pullet breeding strain. He will be much darker in ground colour
than an exhibition male, almost maroon but avoid birds with dull brown patches. He will
have pencilling on his wings and sometimes patches of pencilled feathers on his body.
Study the markings on his wings carefully, the finer the pencilling he has here, the
better pencilling he will give his daughters. His tail will be full, with lacing much
coarser than on an exhibition male, with perhaps some coarse pencilling. It is important
to check his sisters for correct exhibition quality, for if they are good, he will likely
sire daughters of similar quality.
(Hen feathered males are very rare and usually have Campine blood which is to be avoided -
See Part 1 for indicators of Campine blood).
